We are now entering our 14th year of the Turkey Strut 5K! This year's event will have both an in-person and a virtual option, so you participate in whichever way is most comfortable for you. Virtual participants will have Thanksgiving Day through the following Sunday to complete their 5K or 1 mile and submit their results. You can either pick up your shirt and medal at packet pick up on Wednesday or you can add-on shipping during registration and we'll mail it to you.
COVID-19 modifications: as we get closer to the event we will post any updates on how we will modify the event to insure safety for all participants, staff, and volunteers. (These pages edits are currently being made in January and we realize 11 months is a ways off). Efficiency of vaccines and rate of community transmission as we get into the Fall will help guide us in our planning.
This event benefits the We Care House of Winston-Salem. The mission of the We Care House is to meet the physical needs of the people in order to position them so their spiritual needs can be met without distraction. The We Care House is an outreach of St. Peter’s that provides food to the community. Participants are asked to bring at least 3 canned food items to donate to the We Care House food bank.
The event takes place at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds which has PLENTY of parking and room for everyone.
The course is a USATF Certified 5K course and a 1 mile fun run/walk. Finally, you don’t have to sit around the house all day waiting for the turkey to finish baking. Place that turkey in the oven and come join the fun at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds!
The race will begin at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds off Deacon Blvd just across the street from BB&T Field/Stadium. With the incredible year to year growth of this event we have designed this course to accommodate the participants and families. The course runs near BB&T Field/Stadium, Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum, and the Deacon Baseball field stadium. Given that the course is USATF Certified, final run times will go toward state and national records.
Bring your family and out-of-town guests for a great start to the Thanksgiving morning. Strollers and dogs are welcome to join the fun!
The awards are very unique for this event. Turkeys will be given to the Top 3 Overall Male & Female and Top 3 Overall Masters Male & Female.
All participants in the 5K will receive Long Sleeve T-shirts, one-mile fun run participants have the option to purchase a shirt during registration. Finisher Medals for every participant (both the 5K and one-mile fun run)!
What does a "virtual event" mean?
A virtual event means that participants can run the 5K or 1 mile from anywhere they choose. Participants in the virtual option will be able to complete their 5K or 1 mile anytime from Thanksgiving Day through Sunday.
Can we still donate food?
Yes! We will have collection bins available for the food drive during packet pick up on Wednesday and on Thanksgiving morning at the event site.
Will I still get a shirt and medal if I choose the virtual option?
How do we get our swag if it's virtual?
You can pick up your swag during the posted packet pick up times. If you are not local or would feel more comfortable having it shipped, there will be an option during registration for you to add-on shipping for $6. If you choose to have it shipped, then just be aware that the items will arrive after Thanksgiving. We will mail them ASAP.
How do results work for the virtual event?
Participants can submit results a few different ways. Which way you choose is completely up to you, based on which way you feel most comfortable with.
1. Using the RaceJoy App - if you do not run with a smart watch or GPS device, then this is a great way to track yourself. The app will track your distance and automatically submit your results once you have completed the distance (5K or 1 mile). Participants will download RaceJoy from the app store and then search for the Turkey Strut 5K and follow the on-screen prompts to get set up. The advantage of the app is you do not have to know an exact route that equals the distance, as it will track the distance for you. You also don't need to submit anything because the results will automatically post to the results page.
2. Opt in for text results - when you register, you can opt in for texting which will allow you to submit your results via text. Instructions on the format of the text will be sent if you choose this route.
3. Directly through the website - this is very straightforward. From the webpage, you'll click on RESULTS - then Submit Virtual Results. Search your name and then follow the on-screen prompts to submit your time. If you do not want to submit a time but you want to acknowledge you DID IT! then you can simply mark the distance as completed and not put a time.
Once your results are submitted (no matter which way you choose to submit), you will be able to download a Finisher's Certificate as a keepsake.
